ES 1 Final Handout

Ethnic Studies 1: Final Paper Handout

For your final paper, you will explore the connections between race, ethnicity, class, and gender as interlocking/overlapping systems of oppression. Using concrete examples from class readings, you will describe how race/ethnicity, class and gender interlock to further marginalize and exploit women of color, for example. Think of how in Racial Fault Lines, the race and class very much mattered in determing social, political and economic power of individuals and groups during the mid and late 1800s. In Souls of Black Folk, Du Bois explains the perseverance of racial discrimination after the Civil War, while taking into account class oppression. In other words, African Americans where poor and uneducated (in the academic sense) because of structural-social inequalities, not because of racial deficiencies. You might also want to include the handout on Racial Formations, Chapter Four handout. Your paper is due the date and time allotted for our class final.
